Nikolay Pirogov was from 1847 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and received in 1844, 1851 and 1860 the Demidov Prize by the academy. He was appointed honorary citizen of Moscow in 1881. The Pirogov Society was founded four years after his death, which aims for better medical training and treatment in Russia.

Nov 4, 2014 · Pirogov was also the first to perform systematic research into anaesthesia-related morbidity and mortality. Although convinced that the discovery of anaesthesia was one of the greatest achievements of science, he was well aware of its limitations and dangers. Pirogov died on 5 December 1881 in the village of Vishnya (now Vinnytsia, Ukraine).

His textbook on field surgery became the standard reference on the subject and his principles remained virtually unchanged until the Second World War. Pirogov died on 5 December 1881 at his estate in Vishnya.
