Meijer was founded as Meijer's in Greenville, Michigan, in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer, a Dutch immigrant. Meijer was a local barber who entered the grocery business during the Great Depression. His first employees included his 14-year-old son, Frederik Meijer, who later became chairman of the company.
Meijer entered its sixth state with the opening of four stores in Wisconsin. The Michigan Historical Commission recognized Meijer for making history on the site of its original “Thrifty Acres” store with a historical marker on the site of the nation’s first supercenter.

Early History. Hendrik Meijer emigrated from The Netherlands to the United States in 1907, settling in Michigan. In 1914 he opened a barbershop, expanding it to a double storefront by 1923. When the Depression hit, Meijer had trouble finding a tenant to rent the new space in his Greenville, Michigan location.
