Emily Olivia Laura Blunt was born in London on 23 February 1983. She is the second of four children, born to a former actress and English teacher, Joanna Mackie, and a barrister, Oliver Blunt QC. Her mother gave up acting to be a full-time mother before Blunt started school.
From 1999 - 2001, Blunt went to Hurtwood House, the top co-ed boarding school where she would excel at sport, cello and singing. She also had two years of drama studies at Hurtwood's theatre course. In August 2000, she was chosen to perform at the Edinburgh Festival.

Emily began her schooling at ‘Ibstock Place School’ in Roehampton and thereafter attended ‘Hurtwood House,’ a high school for residential students situated in Dorking, Surrey. She completed a two-year program on performing arts besides excelling in singing, playing cello, and sports.
