Ys (イース, Īsu, IPA: [iːsɯ]) ( / ˈiːs /) is a series of action role-playing games developed by Nihon Falcom. [1] The series chronicles the life of the adventurer, Adol Christin. The first game in the series, Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished, was released on the NEC PC-8801 in 1987. [2]
- 1 Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is both the newest Ys game and the latest in the chronological timeline. It takes place in a prison city under Romun control.
- 2 Ys Seven. Ys Seven was released in 2009 for the PSP. It takes place about six months after The Ark of Napishtim. Ys Seven sees Adol and Dogi finally reaching the Capital of Altago (their destination after escaping in Ys VIII).
- 3 Ys VI: The Ark Of Napishtim. Ys VI was released in 2002 and broke the near-decade hiatus between Ys games. It takes place after Adol's escape from the Isle of Seiren.
- 4 Ys VIII: The Lacrimosa of Dana. Ys VIII was released in 2016, and it's available on most modern platforms. It takes place shortly after Ys V (Adol even starts the game with equipment from Kefin).
The Ys series has its roots in the Japanese computer system, the NEC PC-8801. Each of the first three games was released on that platform first. Ports of the game series to console platforms have usually been handled by various other licensee companies, such as Hudson Soft, Tonkin House, and Konami.

- Ys (IV): Memories of Celceta. Ys: Memories of Celceta. Available on: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, PC (Steam) Despite being the fourth game in the series, Memories of Celceta takes place one year after Ys II, and one year before Ys III and is a reboot of Ys IV.
- IX: Monstrum Nox. The most recent entry in the series and set to be released internationally in 2021, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is the latest game in the timeline along with the darkest tonally.
- VII: Seven. Set half a year after the events of Ark of Napishtim, Adol finally reaches Afroca– the continent he actually set out to first visit when he initially left his home village.
- VI: Ark Of Napishtim. What’s impressive about Ark of Napishtim is how it recontextualized five game’s worth of lore into an epic that is to Ys what the first Avengers film was for Phase 1 of the MCU (for lack of better comparison.)
- VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana. The most recent Ys game to release internationally, Lacrimosa of Dana picks up shortly after the events of Ys V (Adol starts the game with Lost Kingdom’s best sword) only for Adol to experience the mother of all shipwrecks.
