Ashington is a town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, with a population of 27,864 at the 2011 Census. [2] It was once a centre of the coal mining industry. The town is 15 miles (24 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne, west of the A189 and bordered to the south by the River Wansbeck.
Ashington is one of the largest towns in Northumberland. It grew from farmland in the early 19th century, to a coal mining village when the colliery opened in 1867. The mines closed in 1988, but Ashington is proud of its history, which is remembered at the nearby museum, Woodhorn Museum.

Ashington is situated to the north of the River Wansbeck and was once described as ‘the world’s largest pit village’, but it no longer has a colliery. It has, in truth, become a small town and is almost entirely a product of the nineteenth and twentieth century.
