- Smallpox Hospital: a relic from the island's former life. Just before you reach Four Freedoms park, you’ll walk past the ruins of the weed-covered Smallpox Hospital, which, when it opened in 1856, was the first hospital in the country dedicated to treatment of the infectious disease.
- The Graduate Hotel: the best – and only – hotel around. The island's sole hotel, the Graduate pays tribute to the rich history of its surroundings, with a hallway on the first floor dedicated to photographs of the Roosevelt family and a copy of FDR's famous "Four Freedoms Speech" in every guest room.
Roosevelt Island is tucked on the side of Manhattan Island. There is a road bridge linking it to Queens and there is also a cable car which can take you across the East River to the island from Manhattan where the terminal is on 2nd Avenue.

Apr 22, 2024 · Roosevelt Island, anchored in the middle of the East River between Manhattan and Queens (but officially a part of Manhattan), is a neighborhood apart. Only two miles long and 800 feet wide at its broadest, it draws scores of visitors for its relative tranquility—and the scenic cable car ride over—though this is a relatively new phenomenon.
