Detective Constable Danny Quinn was a former police detective constable and, for a short time, the second team leader of the Anomaly Research Centre; following Nick Cutter's untimely death. He was classified as MIA after he was marooned in the Pliocene while trying to stop Helen Cutter.

    Background

Danny was born c.1969, and grew up in a middle-class neighbourhood with his parents and his younger brother; Patrick. Around 1995 Patrick went missing while hanging out with his two friends Matt and Ryan Mason in the secluded Brooks house, Danny became determined to find out what had happened to him. Like the majority of the community, Danny became convinced that Ryan, the only one of the trio who did not disappear, was responsible for Patrick's disappearance. Danny went on to become a Police Detective Constable in order to access more information on his brother's case, which appeared to be his primary motivation for joining the police, and he followed any lead with almost obsessive single-mindedness. He didn't find his job in the police particularly satisfying, as he once stated that kicking down doors to gain entry was the only part of the job that he liked. (Episode 3.2, 3.6, 4.7)

    Episode 3.2

Chief: "Forget it, Danny. It's over." Danny: "Not for me." ―Danny refuses to let go of his brother's disappearance. Fourteen years after Patrick's disappearance, Danny spied Jenny Lewis, Connor Temple and Abby Maitland investigating the now-abandoned house where Patrick disappeared. Suspicious of the team and their intentions, Danny forced them to leave immediately, angrily and disgustedly accusing them of being murder tourists. Later, Danny learned that Jenny, Connor and Abby were government from their license plates, and so asked his Chief during target practice if the case on Patrick Quinn's disappearance had been reopened. The chief explained otherwise and told Danny to let Patrick's disappearance go, but Danny refused. Danny later returned to the house, and found Connor alone there. He arrested Connor for trespassing, and locked him in a cell back at the police station. There, Danny was unimpressed by Connor's refusal to talk, and demanded to know why the government were interested in the house. After Danny reluctantly allowed Connor to make a phone call and Jenny came to bail Connor out, Jenny told Danny that she had had his superiors designate the team's presence at the house government business, and so warned him to stay away from the house. The next day, Danny ignored Jenny's warning and returned to the house to find the team, Ryan Mason, and Jimmy Keel dead there. Danny demanded to know what Ryan had done with Patrick, and threatened to shoot him, but managed to calm down and lower his gun. A Camouflage Beast then attacked Danny and knocked him out, but Danny was protected from the creature's claws by an anti-stab vest. After Danny recovered, when the Camo Beast came back to the house through an Anomaly and attacked the team, Danny shot it repeatedly until in fell back through the Anomaly. Afterwards, Danny, having worked out from the Camouflage Beast incursion that Ryan was innocent, apologised to him and was hopeful that Patrick hadn't actually been killed by the Camo Beast, but had escaped through the Anomaly. Jenny recommended that Danny move on from Patrick's disappearance, and shortly afterwards Danny quit the police force.

    Episode 3.4

Jenny: "What's the plan?" Danny: "Well, to be honest, I'm making it up as I go along." ―Danny when distracting the Giganotosaurus with a helicopter. Danny covertly followed the ARC team on his motorcycle, and later Mick Harper when the latter stole Jenny's handheld Anomaly Detection Device. Danny followed Mick and his camera team to an airport, where he broke Connor and Jenny out of a warehouse. Ignoring Jenny's demands for him to leave, Danny instead followed them to the Anomaly in a hangar. Jenny threatened to have him arrested, but Danny refused, and helped Mick and Katherine Kavanagh out of their overturned car. When Connor's new Anomaly Locking Mechanism failed, Danny suggested that they close the hanger door, prompting a frustrated Jenny to order Becker to arrest him. However, before Becker could take Danny away, a Giganotosaurus came through the Anomaly, distracting the team long enough for Danny to escape. Danny found and commandeered a helicopter in the airport, and used it to fly by the Giganotosaurus and distract it from eating Connor. Jenny contacted Danny and was unhappy, but Danny convinced her to let him draw the G. Rex back to the Anomaly. Danny then flew in the helicopter into the hangar and through the Anomaly, followed by the G. Rex. In the Cretaceous on the other side of the Anomaly, Danny saw an entire herd of more Giganotosaurus heading towards the Anomaly, and escaped back through to the Present to warn the team. Connor then successfully locked the Anomaly with the Locking Mechanism. Afterwards, Jenny thanked Danny and explained she would have to arrest him for his interference, but Danny slipped away and fled on his motorcycle.

Lester named Danny, Abby and Connor as the missing people when interviewed about their disappearance.

    Episode 4.1

When Abby and Connor returned to the present, Becker asked them about Danny, to which Connor expressed surprise that he hadn't made it back either. When Lester asked Connor where Danny was, Connor speculated that Danny had gone on to stop Helen from wiping out humanity before being marooned.

    Episode 4.2

Danny's locker from the first ARC building was moved to the second ARC and put into storage. Abby and Connor looked at his locker when they reopened theirs, after a year in the Cretaceous.

Danny was an impulsive man of action, who would not stand idly by and would break rules without hesitation if he felt it necessary. He was not easily intimidated by either man or the various creatures he encountered, and could keep a level head in a crisis. Danny was highly resourceful and independent in the field against creatures with or without any proper weapons at his disposal, but in spite of that he worked well with others of the team. Though he was willing to put the team in the line of danger with him when he had to, he would always put their lives first.

In a way, even though Helen was the only one to ever mention it to him, Danny was a lot like Nick Cutter except for intelligence; both of them being reckless and stubborn. Danny, like Cutter, also seemingly took a liking to Jenny Lewis. Despite this, the both of them never met. Danny was sarcastic and laid-back, with his reckless ways clashing with the more law-abiding ARC members, and he was very open, blunt and uncooperative with people he didn't like and who caused him grief; but to those who earned his friendship and respect, Danny was a joking, supportive and responsible friend.

    Christine Johnson

Danny was very suspicious and distrustful of Johnson and about what she could be up to, and had no problem with breaking into her facility to rescue Eve and to find out what was going on. Danny apparently also had a level of disdain for Johnson's completely-bureaucratic and amoral ways, reacting with open repulsion when she praised Becker for retrieving the Artefact. Despite his disgust for her, Danny apparently still didn't hate Christine enough to let her die, as he tried (unsuccessfully) to save her from a Future Predator as she was dragged through her own Anomaly to her death.

    Connor Temple

When Connor and Danny first met during the ARC's investigation into the Brooks house where Patrick had disappeared, Danny was disgusted, suspicious and aggressive towards Connor and the rest of the ARC team about what they wanted there, and he even arrested Connor when he caught the latter trespassing in the house a second time. While Connor was in Danny's custody, Danny easily tricked Connor into unwittingly expending his rights until Jenny got Connor out of jail. The second time the team met Danny, Connor was gobstruck by Danny's impulsive behaviour and easy lack of regard for Jenny's warnings, and Danny at one point felt Connor was being overly-radical about containing an Anomaly (in testing the Locking Mechanism prototype on it when they could have just sealed the entrance to the Anomaly site). After Danny became the new team leader, Danny was highly protective of Connor when he was in serious danger, although he wasn't above occasionally using Connor as creature-bait.

    Hilary Becker

During Danny's second and third encounters with the ARC team, Becker had to detain or arrest Danny several times, but usually only managed to keep Danny detained briefly if that before he got away. After Danny became the field team's new leader, he and Becker developed a teasing but very close friendship. Danny enjoyed joking with and poking fun at Becker, at one point even calling him "a good little soldier-boy," often just after an Anomaly incursion had been dealt with and victory secured. Becker's life mattered to Danny very much, as when the team briefly thought Becker dead while they were on a rescue mission into the future, Danny was extremely spiteful and disgusted at Jack's lack of gratitude over Becker's sacrifice.

A seasoned police officer and detective, Danny has a knack for coming up with quick on-the-spot decisions and plans which have saved the team from horrible fates on more than one occasion. He is also a competent marksman and it is implied in his first appearance that he is a champion level marksman and has won the regional police championship conte...

•The character of Danny was created by Writer James Moran. He was originally going to be a single-episode policeman called "Emmet Quinn" (the surname came from Moran's friend), before the producers adapted him into the lead character, after Douglas Henshall (Nick Cutter) decided to depart.

•The real reason why Danny did not come back for Series 4/Series 5 was that Jason Flemyng was filming X-Men: First Class and was not able to return full time to play the team leader, thus he only appeared in Episode 4.7.

•The three Anomaly Research Centre's team leaders all originated from three different countries of the British Isles; England, Ireland and Scotland. Danny came from England.

•Danny Quinn was one of the 5inch Primeval action figures planned to be made by Character Options but due to the closure of Woolworths his figure was never mass produced. His original maquette is owned by Tim Haines.
