Circa 1887 the settlement was renamed in honor of William Dougherty, a Gainesville, Texas, banker. The Thomas W. Johnson family acquired and established a residence on the present town in 1880.

The Town was originally settled by pioneers such as Mazeppa Turner, Thomas Johnson and William Nathan Price. The Community was located in the Chickasaw Nation in Tishomingo County, Indian Territory. Mazeppa Turner was the original occupant of the current site of Dougherty.
History. The community was first known as Henderson Flat. On September 3, 1887 a post office was established here and called Dougherty, Indian Territory. The post office took its new name from banker William Dougherty of Gainesville, Texas. [4]
The area now known as Dougherty was settled in Murray County in the mid-1800s, going by many names, including Henderson Flat and Strawberry Flat. It wasn’t until 1887 that the town was named in honor of banker William Dougherty.

Jan 15, 2010 · Settlements of farmers and businesses expanded through the decade, spurred by the completion of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway lines in 1886–87 through Dougherty and Davis. Post offices were established at these locations in 1887 and 1890, respectively.
Apr 24, 2024 · An Oklahoma County judge handed down a 12-year sentence to Dougherty last week. Dougherty will serve four years in prison and eight years on probation.
