Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (17 December 1852 – 2 July 1917) was an English actor and theatre manager. Tree began performing in the 1870s. By 1887, he was managing the Haymarket Theatre in the West End, winning praise for adventurous programming and lavish productions, and starring in many of its productions.

Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (born Dec. 17, 1853, London, Eng.—died July 2, 1917, London, Eng.) was one of the great figures of the English theatre, who became the most successful actor-manager of his time. His half brother, Max Beerbohm, received recognition as a writer and caricaturist.

Born in 1853, Tree’s real name was Herbert Draper Beerbohm. He assumed his famous stage name in the 1870s. After a string of performances, he joined Frank Benson’s company in 1886, where he played Iago before going on to London and the Haymarket Theatre where he eventually became the manager.
