Oct 3, 2019 · The prophets were the people who spoke on God’s behalf. But “the Prophets” (with a capital P) refer to a group of books in the Old Testament. These are the books that expound on the relationship between God and Israel after they formed an alliance in the Torah.

- Minor and Major Prophets. There were hundreds of prophets who lived and ministered in Israel and other parts of the ancient world throughout the centuries between Joshua conquering the promised land (around 1400 B.C.)
- The Book of Isaiah. As a prophet, Isaiah ministered from 740 to 681 B.C. in the southern kingdom of Israel, which was called Judah after the nation of Israel was divided under the rule of Rehoboahm.
- The Book of Jeremiah. Like Isaiah, Jeremiah served as a prophet for the southern kingdom of Judah. He ministered from 626 to 585 B.C., which means he was present during the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians in 585 B.C.
- The Book of Lamentations. Also written by Jeremiah, the Book of Lamentations is a series of five poems recorded after the destruction of Jerusalem. Thus, the major themes of the book involve expressions of grief and sorrow because of Judah's spiritual decline and physical judgment.
Prophets of the Bible. God sent prophets throughout history to guide and warn His people. As often happens with humans, they turned their backs and didn’t follow the instructions and warnings.
They were called prophets, seers, watchmen, men of God, messengers, and servants of the Lord. Unger writes: According to I Samuel 9:9 the prophet was in earlier Israel commonly called a ro’eh, that is one who perceives that which does not lie I the realm of natural sight or hearing.
In the Old Testament history books (Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah), prophets such as Deborah, Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, Elisha, Huldah, and others came forward to speak God’s word to a rebellious people.
Pieter Verhoef explains, "These titles together define the prophet as a man who has been called to communicate the revealed word of God, a man who has an intimate relationship with God as his servant and messenger, and as one whose task it is to keep watch over God's people."
