The Philadelphia businessman Samuel Fels, the manufacturer of Fels Naphtha soap, commissioned this Concerto for Iso Briselli, a prodigy violinist who graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music the same year as Barber. The young composer wrote the first two movements in Switzerland during the summer of 1939.
Initially, the composer’s reasons for cracking on with a new work were primarily financial: he’d been commissioned to write a violin concerto by one Samuel Fels, father to one of Barber’s classmates at the Curtis Institute of Music and a Philadelphia industrialist. Fels was a wealthy man, but a seemingly demanding one, too.
Barber also wrote a Violin Concerto (1941) and a Cello Concerto (1946). His Piano Sonata (1949) is a monument of 20th-century American piano music.
