POETIC JUSTICE is only average from an overall technical standpoint, with fair acting and abysmal writing. No redeeming value can be found in the film, artistically or socially, and any hint of romance or feeling is totally obliterated by the enormous amount of offensive language and negative, depressing attitudes present in every character.
The flaws in POETIC JUSTICE stem more from an excess of ambition than a deficit of ideas. It tries to be too many films in one, from road-movie romance to trenchant drama to social commentary.

“Poetic Justice” falls into the canon of ‘a lot of (white) critics’ got this wrong when it came out. It’s the exact movie — big swings, pure control, and sharp tonal shifts — you’d expect from a director who earned a mountain of cache from making “Boyz n the Hood.” It’s a great hangout movie. A great road trip movie.
