May 17, 2019 · World Champion and Olympic Alternate Ashton Locklear announced her retirement from gymnastics on May 16, 2019. Locklear was a part of the 2014 gold-medal-winning U.S. world championship team in Nanning, China. Earlier that year, she helped Team USA win gold at the Pan Am Championships and also earned an individual gold medal on bars.
Carrie Locklear said she had a follow-up conversation with the U.S. Center for SafeSport in March and subsequently spoke to an investigator. She has not heard anything from SafeSport since. Ashton Locklear, who is training in Texas and working to make the 2020 Olympic team, said she hoped more gymnasts would stand up to reveal abusers.
