The 34-year-old goalkeeper went straight into the starting line-up, helping Bayern draw 1-1 away to RB Leipzig. Sommer’s decision announced by the Swiss soccer federation will likely see Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund step up as the first-choice ’keeper.
Yann Sommer is one of the most successful goalkeepers Switzerland has ever had and holds the record for his position on the national football team. After eight and a half years with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first Bundesliga, he moved to FC Bayern Munich in early 2023 before transferring to Inter Milan in the summer of 2023.
