Hellboy has already had the stage set and is now free to launch headlong into action. X-Men 2 and Spiderman 2 are considered by many to be better than the films that launched the franchise, and I am convinced that much of this has to do with the laborious task of introducing the characters and setting the foundation for the films that will follow.

Hellboy 2 was Del Toro making the material his own. The troll market alone was better than the entirety of Hellboy 1. Nothing in the first movie came close to the inventiveness in the second.

That's one of my favorite superhero/fantasy/comic book movies, and I think it's better than the first. I absolutely adore the opening sequence where they use puppets to tell the story of the golden army. I would absolutely watch a feature film about it in that style. Though, young Hellboy is kind of nightmare fuel in that scene, haha.
