History of Armstrong Redwoods SNR. In 1860 R.B. Lundsford established a lumber camp on the north bank of the Russian River which grew with success and was later know as “Stumptown”. The grove was operated by Sonoma County until 1934 when the State took over. In 1936 the grove was opened to the public as Armstrong Redwoods State Park. The grove's status was changed to a reserve in 1964 when a greater understanding of its ecological significance prompted a more protective management of the resource.

Coast Redwoods are classified as temperate rainforests and they need wet and mild climates to survive.
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve encompasses 805 acres. Austin Creek State Recreation area is approximately 5683 acres. When was the fire? Most of the fires were started by lightning strikes that hit the bases of trees during dry season. Fire travels through the root system to ignite the bases of other trees. The last big fire was in 1926.
Jul 2020. Muir Woods, just north of San Francisco, is beautiful, but Armstrong Redwoods blows it out of the water! The sheer density of huge redwoods and beautiful forest makes this spot a can't-miss if you're at all near the area. There are a bunch of moderate-to-difficult hikes with some decent elevation changes.
There are four campgrounds in Redwood National and State Parks. Jedediah Smith, Prairie Creek and Gold Bluffs Beach campgrounds are open all year. Mill Creek campground is open in the summer months. There is a $35.00 per night/per site fee to camp. Reservations can be made by calling Reserve California at 1-800-444-7275.
