Silent Running received generally warm reviews, with many critics comparing it to 2001: A Space Odyssey, because of Trumbull's connection to both productions. Time magazine's critic, Jay Cocks, praised Silent Running for having the earlier film's "same kind of technical virtuosity, the same sense of still, vast symmetry of the galaxies."
