Apr 29, 2022 · Just a short drive from downtown Billings, the Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to go, walk, picnic, and enjoy some local lore. Our Montana road trip took us all over the southeastern part of the state, and we loved so many of the famous sites, like the Pompey’s Pillar, Yellowstone, and the Battlefield of Little Bighorn as well as a day out hunting for gems.
The following year the city of Billings surrendered management of the caves to the Parks Division of the Montana Department of Fish and Game, and the site was renamed Pictograph Caves State Historic Site.
