롤랑 바르트는 1915년 11월 12일 노르망디 셰르부르에서 태어났다. 10대 후반에 폐결핵에 걸리게 되고, 이후 일생에 걸쳐 여러번 요양원을 드나들게 된다. 1935년부터 1939년까지 소르본 대학에서 고전문학을 공부한 후, 파리에서 고등학교 선생을 했다.
