History of the Russian Settlement at Fort Ross, California. Arctic & Northern History. For the small group of California natives, that cool, overcast day in March 1812 was a forerunner of massive change. They stood there in astonishment as a large sailing ship came to anchor in the little cove beneath their quiet bluff top settlement.
Drive along the Sonoma County coastline, 11 miles northwest of Jenner, and you’ll find an unexpected park where local history and natural beauty converge. One of the first state parks in California, Fort Ross Historic State Park was established in 1906 to preserve North America’s southernmost Russian settlement.
The Natural Environment. In 1811, Ivan Kuskov chose a fine site on a wide California bluff for the Russian-American Company’s distant outpost. The lands were influenced not just by that bluff, but by a complex of topographic features. The bluff on which the fort stands is a young coastal marine terrace.
Fort Ross was established by the Russian-American Fur Company in 1812 for the threefold purpose of exploiting the rich fur hunting grounds of the California coast, opening trade with Spanish California, and providing an agricultural depot to supply Russian settlements in Alaska.
