Dec 11, 2023 · To quickly recap: Reaper doesn’t come with virtual instruments (except for ReaSynth and ReaSamplOmatic5000). However, it does include essential audio effects you can use for mixing and mastering purposes. If you want more instruments, you will have to download and install third-party VSTi’s.
Its an engineers DAW. FL is a creative daw, more aimed at ITB producers. It's better for loop based stuff, vst instrument stuff, piano roll stuff, etc. Reaper's interface is more linear, FL more item/loop based. Reaper works extremely well with virtual instruments and effects, as well as recording audio input.
So my short answer is that editing midi is no problem for me but drawing in midi with the stock Reaper configuration is not as much fun as Cubase or Ableton. The biggest issue with stock Reaper for me is drums. You definitely should watch some videos and do the proper set up before making any judgements.
