One Saturday in the 1920s, a small boy named Robert Byrd stood at a second-floor window in Matoaka, W.Va., and watched wide-eyed as a parade of men, including his adoptive father, marched past in white robes, white hoods and white masks. They were local members of the Ku Klux Klan.
George Gordon (D), U.S. Representative for Tennessee's 10th congressional district, became one of the Klan's first members. In 1867, Gordon became the Klan's first Grand Dragon for the Realm of Tennessee, and wrote its Precscript, a constitution setting out the organization's purpose, principles, and the like.
The same year, he was encouraged to run for the West Virginia House of Delegates by the Klan's grand dragon; Byrd won, and took his seat in January 1947.
Biden did eulogize Sen. Robert C. Byrd when he died, but Byrd was not a “grand wizard” in the Ku Klux Klan. He was a member of the KKK in the early 1940s but later renounced his affiliation with the hate group.
