Calamity Jane comes to the town of Deadwood, South Dakota one day. She decides to revitalize the local saloon by bringing them Chicago star Adelaide Adams. Unfortunately, she instead brings them Adelaide's maid, Katie Brown, whom she found trying on her costumes. Katie becomes a hit with everyone, including Jane's secret love, Lt. Daniel Gilmartin.
Calamity Jane was an excellent vehicle to launch Miss Day’s career into the stratosphere, for it catapulted her to new heights among the greatest of stars. She performed with such gusto, that one film critic said, ‘ By picture’s end, she is within hailing distance of Ginger Rogers and Judy Garland’.
Martha Canary (Calamity Jane), the famous frontierswoman, was born in 1856 in the vicinity of Princeton, Missouri, the eldest daughter of Robert and Charlotte Canary. In 1864 the Canary family joined the gold rush to Montana. Martha's parents died in the West a few years later, and Martha was reported alone in the 1869 census of Piedmont, Wyoming.
