Hellboy movies aren't really supposed to be very "deep". They've got enough background to give the sense of a whole world. But on the whole, they're fairly shallow. What gets them by is "fun". If you look at the films for some deeper meaning, "You Are Doing It Wrong". Also, the overview is wrong. Krauss wasn't done by Thomas Kretschmann.
