It was and still is an intense film to watch - especially during the crucifixion scenes. The difference here is that Mel Gibson (director) didn't pull any punches. It's extremely graphic, but the actual event would have been no less. Jim Caviezel's performance as Christ is inspired and solid.

The movie is about the suffering/passion of Jesus, and turning the camera away would not have an impact on you. The movie shows what Jesus actually went through for all of mankind's sins (according to Christianity). Mel Gibson did not exagerate the violence or make it look like horror movie or Kill Bill violence.
The Passion of the Christ is 726 on the JustWatch Daily Streaming Charts today. The movie has moved up the charts by 321 places since yesterday. In the United States, it is currently more popular than Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl but less popular than Bridge of Spies.

Mel Gibson deserves to become a Saint for making it, even though the world and Hollywood hates him for it.
