Because "coastal elite" is a bit of an insult-term, like "PC types" or "flyover country" . Just like nobody would ID themselves as being from flyover country or as being PC, there aren't many people who'd call themselves "coastal elites". It just so happens Trump's more in the group that would call people that, than the group who get called that.
