As Michael Witwer points out in that book we mentioned above, it is quite ironic that Gygax himself, while being decried by many in the media for creating a supposedly “satanic” game, was in actuality a fairly religious individual and, at times, a door-to-door representative of the church.

Nov 9, 2023 · One thing a lot of people don't know is that Dungeons & Dragons was created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson [who were] both very devout Christians. At least for some of his life, Gary Gygax was a Jehovah's Witness. And so the game always had these very Christian elements in it. The game was about good versus evil.

Hijacking your comment to point out that Gary Gygax was a Jehovah's Witness, not a Catholic. He's actually a bit of a celebrity in the exJW community. JWs tell their members they will be miserable and accomplish nothing if they ever leave the cult. Gary was kicked out for making DnD and lead a reasonably great life.
