The reign of Septimius Severus was a transformative period for the Roman Empire, with substantial evidence of his enduring legacy. In no place is this more visible than in Roman Britain, where Severus’ influence has been cemented in the soil and stone of ancient fortifications and through the diversity of his legions.
Septimius Severus. Lucius Septimius Severus was a Roman emperor from 193 to 211 AD. He was of Libyan descent from Lepcis Magna and came from a prominent local Punic family, which in the past held both senatorial and consular status. He visited Rome for the first time in 163 during the reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
After a series of civil wars, Septimius Severus emerged victoriously and he became the unchallenged ruler of the Roman World. First, he defeated Niger in the east before he vanquished Clodius Albinus in a close fought battle. After this, he was the absolute ruler of the Roman Empire. Severus was the first African native to be Emperor of Rome.

Dozens of portraits of Septimius Severus have survived from antiquity—including works of bronze, marble, and gemstones—and thousands of coins bear his image. VMFA’s portrait has been called the “Marcus Aurelius–Severus type,” after the emperor Marcus Aurelius, who reigned from 161 to 180 and was extremely popular.
