Dec 22, 2021 · 8. Visit the unique Dr. Increase Mathews House. Editor's Note: There's no photo available at the time of writing. This the oldest building in this county and was a former home to Dr. Increase Matthews, an early doctor in Zanesville. Later on, the house was turned into a museum.

By 1910, S.A. Weller Pottery was the largest pottery manufacturer in the world. Zanesville’s Karl Kappes was born just 10 years before Weller. After studying art in Cincinnati, New York, Paris, and Munich, he found his way back home. In the years straddling the turn of the 20 th century, he worked for Weller Pottery.
Ebenezer Zane founded Zanesville in 1800. The village was located at the junction of the Licking River with the Muskingum River. Zane had built a ferry service at this place for people traveling along the frontier road known as Zane's Trace. By the War or 1812, the town had approximately 1,400 people. It became the Muskingum County seat in 1804.
Zanesville was named one of Ohio's best hometowns by Ohio Magazine for 2011. Johnson's Mill/Salt Creek Covered Bridge, located on the eastern edge of Zanesville on Arch Hill Road is the only remaining pure Warren truss covered bridge in the world.
