Charlemagne succeeded in uniting the majority of Western and Central Europe, and was the first recognized emperor to rule in the west after the fall of the Western Roman Empire approximately three centuries earlier. Lothair married Teutberga, daughter of Boso the Elder. He repudiated her in 862 for his concubine Waldrada. From 858 until 869 he battled to get rid of his wife.
