He is known as a co-founder of the comedy group The Kids in the Hall, who have appeared together in a number of television, stage, and film productions, including their 1988–1995 TV sketch comedy show and the 1996 film Brain Candy.

He made his film debut in the 1986 comedy High Stakes, followed by several TV movies. He and old friend Kevin McDonald helped to form the sketch comedy group and TV series The Kids in the Hall, so named after a Jack Benny joke. Running from 1989 to 1994, the show earned a devoted following and several Emmy nominations.
