Johannes Brahms je imel starejšo sestro in mlajšega brata. Sprva so živeli v bližini mestnega pristanišča v hamburški četrti Gängeviertel, kasneje pa v majhni hiši v Dammtorwallu, mestecu v Inner Alster. Johann Jakob je prvi glasbeno izobraževal sina.
