History of the Nenets. The proto-Samoyeds migrated to the Arctic in the first millenium BC from the Altai-Sayan region near Mongolia. There, they interbred with a short-statured aboriginal Arctic people, and became the Nenets. Those short-statured aboriginal people live on today in Nenets legends as Sihirtia.
