Mar 12, 2013 · The Khmer Empire was a powerful state in South East Asia, formed by people of the same name, lasting from 802 CE to 1431 CE. At its peak, the empire covered much of what today is Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and southern Vietnam.
The Khmer people are the largest ethnic group in Cambodia, making up over 90% of the total population. They trace their origins back to the ancient Khmer Empire that ruled much of Southeast Asia from the 9th to 15th century AD.
