    • Blur - Song 2
    • Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks
    • Bloc Party - Banquet
    • Built to Spill - Carry The Zero
    • Cage The Elephant - No Rest For The Wicked
    • Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
    • Cake - I Will Survive
    • R.E.M. - It's The End of The World as We Know It
    • Death Cab For Cutie - Soul Meets Body
    • Mgmt - Kids

And what a better way to open this list than with a game-changing "Song 2" by Blur. Originally intended as a somewhat humorous song, it eventually became one of the commercially most successful rock songs of all time.

"Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John is one of those earworm kinds of songs that you just can't get out of your head. Even though it's been a while since the song came out, it still sounds fresh and catchy.

Now we're going back to 2005 and Bloc Party's song "Banquet." The song is often described as "dance-punk," but it fits the indie rock label as well, doesn't it?

The late 1990s were crucial for the development of modern rock music. We can clearly see that with Idaho-based Built to Spill and their 1999 indie rock masterpiece "Carry the Zero."

We could use more of Cage the Elephant stuff on UG, don't you think? Well, this week, the UG community reminds us of their work with "No Rest for the Wicked."

No, these aren't any new kinds of pickups on the market, this is the alternative rock band Silversun Pickups. But all the lame jokes aside (as if you would expect anything else from our editorial team), "Lazy Eye" is a great addition to this list.

Up next, we have a marvelous cover of Gloria Gaynor's legendary hit song "I Will Survive." And there's something really special about Cake's version, giving this song a completely different and more laidback vibe.

Of course, R.E.M. is an unavoidable mention on a list like this one. From all their works, the UG community chose "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." Well, it's 2020 and it does kind of feel like the end of the world. And we do feel fine, don't we?

There's a lot of stuff from Death Cab For Cutie's discography that we could put here. But the one that really stands out is from the band's "Plans" record, "Soul Meets Body." Even to this day, it still remains the band's most commercially successful song.

You rarely find a song that's as catchy as "Kids" by MGMT. Well, it's kind of hard to say whether this counts as a rock song, but we'll let it slide.

  2. Sep 27, 2023 · 5. Last Nite - The Strokes. In our list, Top 100 Greatest Indie Rock Songs Post 2000, we crowned Last Nite as the number one song. • 1st place: The Killers – Mr. Brightside (2003) As soon as the iconic intro of “Mr. Brightside” with its iconic opening line “Coming out of my cage” blares through the rocking halls, the tree is on fire.
    • 2nd place: Radiohead – Creep (1992) The relationship between the British rock band “Radiohead” and their world hit “Creep” was considered for a long time as conceivably complicated.

    • 4th place: Blur – Song 2 (1997) Woo-hoo! Hardly any song is so much associated with the British rock group “Blur” as that track, which was baptized at the time with the casual name “Song 2.
