He was middle of 5 children of James Patrick Joseph Kelly, a phonograph salesman, and his wife, Harriet Catherine Curran. His father was born in Peterborough , Ontario, Canada, to an Irish Canadian family.
Athletic childhood. Eugene Curran Kelly was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 23, 1912, the middle son of five children. His father was Canadian-born and loved sports, especially hockey. Every winter Kelly Sr. would flood the family backyard and make an ice rink for hockey.
Parents: James Patrick Joseph Kelly and Harriet Curran were Gene’s parent. They married in 1906. His father was Canadian-born in Peterborough Canada in 1875 and loved sports which are where Gene got his love for sports and got some of his dance styles from.
