La Amistad was a Spanish-owned schooner that carried 53 African slaves from West Africa to Cuba in 1839. The slaves rebelled and took control of the ship, but were captured by the US Navy and faced legal battles for their freedom.
The film opens on the ship Amistad, where Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) is able to free himself from shackles and release his fellow prisoners. They rise up against the Spanish crew of the ship, which is taking them from a Havana slave market to another destination in Cuba.
In 1839, the slave ship Amistad set sail from Cuba to America. During the long trip, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) leads the slaves in an unprecedented uprising.
