Mary was a first-century Jewish woman of Nazareth, the wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus. She is a central figure of Christianity, venerated under various titles such as virgin or queen, many of them mentioned in the Litany of Loreto.
Who was Mary of Nazareth? It depends on which Mary you’re talking about. There were two: a Jewish peasant girl living in a backwater province of the Roman Empire, and; the semi-goddess Virgin Mary, in Christian churches all over the world. This page describes the first one.

Mary is known from biblical references, which are, however, too sparse to construct a coherent biography.
Mary of Nazareth was a Jewish peasant girl. She lived in a world in which 70% of people were peasant farmers. She worked hard at a range of tasks, and she loved and looked after her family. The small, conservative town of Nazareth had a population of no more than 400.
Mary of Nazareth is one of the few women in the ancient world whose life story we know: as girl, mother and mature woman. Even so, the gospels are about Jesus, not his mother. Her appearances are limited, and this makes it difficult to know what the real woman was like.

Mary is the first disciple. God became flesh and lived among us in Mary. She trusted her life to God. Mary followed her son and was among the circle of disciples he gathered around himself. When the men deserted him at the cross, Mary was there with the other women who never abandoned Jesus.
