According to the Beaufort Scale, gale force winds can be divided into four subcategories.
The U.S. National Weather Service defines a gale as sustained surface wind moving at a speed between 34 and 47 knots (63.0 and 87.0 km/h; 17.5 and 24.2 m/s; 39.1 and 54.1 mph). Forecasters typically issue gale warnings when winds of this strength are expected.
Gale. Moderately high (18-25 ft) waves of greater length, edges of crests begin to break into spindrift, foam blown in streaks. Twigs breaking off trees, generally impedes progress. 9. 41-47. Strong Gale. High waves (23-32 ft), sea begins to roll, dense streaks of foam, spray may reduce visibility.
Beaufort Wind Scale. One of the first scales to estimate wind speeds and the effects was created by Britain's Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857). He developed the scale in 1805 to help sailors estimate the winds via visual observations. The scale starts with 0 and goes to a force of 12.
