Dec 27, 2023 · To complete our Dawg in December Artist of the Month series, we asked several musicians who have worked with and made music with the inimitable David Grisman what it’s like to really know him.
David Grisman. David Jay Grisman[1] (born March 23, 1945) is an American mandolinist. His music combines bluegrass, folk, and jazz in a genre he calls "Dawg music". He founded the record label Acoustic Disc, which issues his recordings and those of other acoustic musicians.
They were both members of Old & In The Way in 1973 and the Great American String Band in 1974. In the 1990's they performed live together and recorded many sessions at Grisman's Dawg Studios. The first recording resulting from these sessions was the Garcia / Grisman CD released in 1991. More followed.
Among the backing musicians are the core members of David Grisman's old "dawg music" crew -- David Grisman, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor, et.al. -- along with some interesting folks singing in the background, like David Allan Coe, Lacy J. Dalton, Dennis Wilson and some of the dudes from the Oak Ridge Boys.
