Sir Leslie Stephen KCB FBA (28 November 1832 – 22 February 1904) was an English author, critic, historian, biographer, mountaineer, and an early humanist activist. He was also the father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.

And, not incidentally, a pioneering mountaineer who made early and important contributions to the literature of what is known as the golden age of alpinism.
Sir Leslie holds a unique place in our literary and cultural history as a distinguished man of letters, and especially as the first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography and the author of as many as 378 of its original biographies (see Lee).
