Three episodes into Penny Dreadful: Season 3 and the show's concretely now, with the end reveal here in "Good and Evil Braided Be," separated into three separate stories. With each character now accounted for.
Ethan's grueling (but also gorgeous looking) Wild West adventure features him, Hecate, Sir Malcolm, and Kaetenay. Doctors Frankenstein and Jekyll are collaborating to bring Lily to her knees while Lily plans on a quiet, behind-the-scenes matriarchal bloodbath uprising. And with the surprise that John Clare was actually one of Vanessa's asylum orderlies in his former life, he's now been brought into her Dracula tale.
Which makes sense given his affinity, as The Monster, for Vanessa. The change in his expression, from joy to sorrow, when he saw Vanessa and then saw her meet Dr. Sweet in the Limehouse district was heartbreaking. And their scenes together back in Season 2 were so great that I'm happy to see the show tease a reunion. I'm not sure what it will take to undo Dracula and his madness, but I'm sure a super-strong, bloodless reanimated creature won't hurt Vanessa's defenses.
I'm beginning to wonder why Dracula is going through so much trouble to get close to Vanessa as someone else, though I still really enjoy his alternate persona and his dates with Vanessa. Especially this week when they spoke about them both trying to give life another go. Meanwhile, the Victor/Lily story is gorgeous and violent, but lacking, while ...
