Burdines (English: / b ɜːr ˈ d aɪ n z / bur-DYNZE) was an American chain of department stores operating in the state of Florida, headquartered in Miami. The original store opened in Bartow, Florida in 1896 [ 1 ] as a carriage-trade shop.
Known as "The Florida Store," Burdines opened in 1898 in the burgeoning city of Miami. As the city grew, business boomed. The store quickly branched out, even launching a mail order service in Latin America, which made it a popular choice for soldiers stationed overseas.
