Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

So that was Shaw's big return! Wow! What a spectacular chapter.

Of course, by return I mean to the show, not to the team, as this was a dark, subversive, heartbreaking story. I'm not sure how many of you were able to get out ahead of this one, what with the virtual reality twist and all, but either way it was really superbly executed. Shaw killing Reese may have tipped this chapter's hat a little bit, since many fans might not have believed Reese would go out like that (though even within the VR world Samaritan created it was still treated like a huge deal), but I think it worked better than expected due to the fact that the last episode that aired was all about Reese and his devotion to the Machine and the mission. A devotion that cost him his relationship with Iris.

Thanks to screeners, I've actually watched this episode twice now. And even though I knew the outcome the second time, Root's expression when Shaw puts the gun to her head still killed me. Amy Acker's ability to create heartache with her eyes is a true talent. See also, of course, her fierce reaction to when Shaw fell back in "If-Then-Else."

And hearing Shaw tell Root that she's was the safe place Shaw went to in her mind while being tortured was also heart-wrenching. Shaw's feelings for Root - for anyone really - are buried so deep that it takes extreme measures to draw them out. So with these two, and their dynamic, the romance, especially on Shaw's part, is always bound to creep up at the most dangerous, intense of times.

Since this episode was, overall, a fake out, there weren't any big plot points here other than Samartian's terrifying persistence in trying to convert Shaw into an asset. It really does see her as the key to locating the Machine and its precious, spirited assets. So here, within one of its relentless cyber mindf***s, we got ourselves a kickass Shaw episode. With a ton of action, some huge twists (that sort of wrapped into themselves), and a sexual consummation that was years in the making.

No, nothing that happened between Root and Shaw in "6,741" was real, but the emotions were real. And our initial experience of it was real. The rug got pulled out from under us at the end, but there was a touch of relief within that swerve seeing as how it also worked to undo huge moments of tragedy.

"6,741" was a steller, evolutionary example just how insanely touching and thought-provoking this series can be. With "If-Then-Else" as its launching pad, this episode cleverly sucked us into a virtual world of love and sacrifice.
