1991: The Year Punk Broke, released theatrically in 1992, is a documentary directed by Dave Markey, [1] [2] featuring American alternative rock band Sonic Youth on tour in Europe in 1991. In August of 1991 New York's Sonic Youth invited Los Angeles filmmaker David Markey along on a two week summer festival tour of Europe. The band was excited about their opening act, a little known band from the Pacific Northwest, Nirvana. Along the way they would cross paths with Dinosaur Jr., Babes In Toyland, Gumball, and The Ramones.
Nirvana signed to Geffen Records in the spring of 91. Geffen was a major label that is now owned by Universal Music Group which is one of the big 3 major labels that control about 92% of the music industry. 1991 really is the year punk broke because the culture went from being an underground community to being a top 40 corporate commodity.
