The Royal National Theatre in London, commonly known as the National Theatre Founded by Laurence Olivier in 1963, many well-known actors have performed at the National Theatre. Until 1976, the company was based at The Old Vic theatre in Waterloo.
Work on the National Theatre started in 1969; the Lyttelton and Olivier theatres opened in 1976 and the Cottesloe the following year. The design process was, in some ways, reminiscent of that which produced the present Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1932.
