David Livingstone FRGS FRS ( / ˈlɪvɪŋstən /; 19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873) was a Scottish physician, Congregationalist, pioneer Christian missionary [2] with the London Missionary Society, and an explorer in Africa. Early in 1867 a deserter carried off his medical chest, but Livingstone pressed on into central Africa. He was the first European to reach Lake Mweru (November 8, 1867) and Lake Bangweulu (July 18, 1868). Assisted by Arab traders, Livingstone reached Lake Tanganyika in February 1869.
