This 1956 recording based on George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess was the second "complete" recording of the opera after the 1951 version, and the first recording of the work to feature jazz singers and musicians instead of operatic singers and a classical orchestra.
Known worldwide as an “American Folk Opera,” this Tony Award-winning adaptation premiered on Broadway in 2011 with additional scenes and updated musical arrangements. MTH’s production marks one of the first regional presentations of this Broadway adaptation.
Jazz musicians have been drawn to George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess since its premier in 1935, but when Bethlehem Records, a New York-based independent jazz label, released a full version of what Gershwin called his "folk opera" in 1956, it was the first time the complete work was performed using jazz musicians and singers.
