Stephen Valentine Patrick William Allen (December 26, 1921 – October 30, 2000) was an American television and radio personality, comedian, musician, composer, writer, and actor. In 1954, he achieved national fame as the co-creator and first host of The Tonight Show, which was the first late-night television talk show.

Jan 8, 2001 · Allen, 78, died Oct. 30 of what seemed to be a heart attack while napping at his son's Los Angeles area home. A Los Angeles Coroner's spokesman said on Friday that autopsy results showed that the real cause of death was a ruptured blood vessel, caused by injuries to Allen's chest from a minor traffic accident earlier in the day.
