Jan Nisar Akhtar (18 February 1914 – 19 August 1976) was an Indian poet of Urdu ghazals and nazms, and a part of the Progressive Writers' Movement, who was also a lyricist for Bollywood.

On 14 February 1914, Akhtar was born into a family of prominent writers and Islamic scholars. He completed his post-graduate from Aligarh Muslim University and started teaching in the 1940s.
